The Blue Cave on Bisevo island is one of Croatia’s most famous natural wonders. Every summer, thousands of visitors make the trip to see the magical blue light that fills the cave. Here’s everything you need to know to make the most of your visit.
What is the Blue Cave?
The Blue Cave (Modra spilja) is a sea cave on the eastern side of Bisevo, a small island off the coast of Vis. Sunlight enters through an underwater opening and reflects off the white limestone floor, filling the entire cave with an ethereal blue glow.
The effect is strongest between 11:00 and 13:00 on sunny days, when the sun is at the right angle. The whole visit inside the cave lasts about 5 to 10 minutes, but it’s a moment you won’t forget.

Best time to visit
The cave is open from April to October, but the peak season runs from June through September. For the best blue light effect, aim for a visit between 11:00 and 12:00 on a clear, sunny day.
Early season (May, June) and late season (September) offer smaller crowds with the same stunning light. July and August are the busiest months, and wait times at the cave entrance can reach 1 to 2 hours.
How to get there from the Makarska Riviera
From Brela or anywhere on the Makarska Riviera, the most popular way to visit is on a full-day boat tour. The journey takes about 2 hours by speedboat, with multiple island stops along the way.
Our Blue Cave & Five Islands tour departs from Brela harbour at 08:00 and includes the Blue Cave, Stiniva Bay, Vis town for lunch, the Green Cave, and Budikovac lagoon.
What to expect
You’ll transfer to a small rowing boat at the cave entrance (large boats can’t fit inside). The boatman rows you in through a narrow opening, and suddenly the cave opens up into a chamber filled with glowing blue light.
Photography is allowed, but flash won’t help. The blue light is natural, and cameras capture it well without any assistance.

Tips for the best experience
- Book a tour that arrives at the cave before noon for the strongest light
- Go on a sunny day, as overcast weather reduces the effect significantly
- The cave can close due to rough seas, so have a flexible schedule if possible
- Bring sunscreen and a hat, as you’ll be on the water most of the day
- The water around Bisevo is excellent for swimming, so pack your swimsuit
Is it worth it?
Absolutely. Despite the short time inside the cave, the combination of the Blue Cave, the boat journey, and the other island stops makes it one of the best day trips you can do in Croatia.
